The Best Rent-To-Own Mower for a 1-Acre Yard

April 22, 2025 · 5 min read

One acre is the sweet spot where push mowers stop making sense and ride-on mowers start to pay for themselves. With a 21-inch push mower, a one-acre yard takes most homeowners 2.5 to 3.5 hours. A riding mower with a 42-inch deck cuts that down to about an hour. A zero-turn with a 48 to 54-inch deck does it in 30 to 45 minutes.

For most one-acre yards, a 42 to 46-inch riding mower is the value pick. Rent-to-own monthly payments typically start around $90 per month for a basic riding mower and climb to $130 to $160 for a higher-spec model with a hydrostatic transmission and a larger deck.

If your yard has tight obstacles — flower beds, trees, fences, a swing set — a zero-turn with a 42 or 48-inch deck will save you a lot of trim time. Expect rent-to-own payments around $140 to $200 per month for an entry-level zero-turn.

Hills change the math. If your one-acre yard has slopes steeper than 15 degrees, stick with a riding mower (lower center of gravity) instead of a zero-turn, or look at an articulating model designed for hills.
